What To Wear for Salsa Lessons at SSQQ in Houston?

by Lindsay W
(Houston, Texas)

I've heard that for dance lessons in general, and salsa in particular, shoes that DON'T grip the floor are best. But what attire is the best for salsa lessons- for guys AND girls- without being over-dressed or under-dressed? My boyfriend isn't sure if a polo and jeans is ok, and I'd like to wear jeans too. We're brand new at this :)

What to Wear for Salsa Lessons
by: Anonymous

Anything you are comfortable in that allows you to move! It gets cool in some of the rooms so bring a lite sweater. Once you begin dancing you can take it off. I've worn jeans, dresses, skirts. Be careful of the revealing skirt, although when you are out at the club they are very fun!

Comfortable shoes that are not too high work best for me, but I'm tall and the higher I wear the further I'll fall if I do fall...haven't yet. :)

DSOL makes good dance shoes but they can be pricey but you can find them on Ebay occasionally as well as other dance shoes. I haven't found any good stores in Houston yet so if anyone knows of any please let me know.

Most importantly the shoes with the rubber soles do not let you move.

Joining Salsa classes is the best thing I've done this year. I hope you enjoy it and don't get discouraged! Just PRACTICE!

Dress for Salsa Comfortably (Part 1)
by: Salsa Dancing Addict

You are right about the shoes. You shouldn't wear sneakers because sneakers will grip the floor too much and you risk hurting your joints from being twisted. You should wear comfortable shoes preferably without a rubber sole. Dance shoes with a suede bottom work best, jazz dance sneakers, or dress shoes with a leather sole. You can also wear heels with the straps, so your heel doesn't come up from the shoe.

You can come in jeans and a t-shirt. Skirts are fine too, but you might want to wear shorts underneath if you think it will fly up. Halter tops and tank tops should also be ok as long as any moves don't require you to bend over (for obvious reasons). You shouldn't have to worry about bending over for beginner classes though.

Dress for Salsa Comfortably (Part 2)
by: Salsa Dancing Addict

Guys usually come dressed in jeans and a t-shirt or polo shirt. Sometimes they show up in a button-down shirt. It really depends on the weather.

During winter, you shouldn't wear a sweater or turtle neck to class. You'll end up sweaty and hot.

If you want to have some fun in class, show up with one of those funny graphic t-shirts.

For salsa dances, you should come dressed to impress unless the dress attire for the club is casual.

Hope this helps!
