Spy Bar – 740 10th Street; Marion, Iowa 52302
by Nicole C
I love Spy Bar because of the wonderful Salsa Community in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The first time I ever salsa danced was here, 3 years ago, on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I missed the lessons that night, so after watching a while I asked two gentlemen to show me how to dance and the rest asked me. That night I counted 15 different men I danced with (none of whom I’d ever met before) and they didn’t mind that I was a beginner. If you’re looking to be picked up or hook up stay off the dance floor or go somewhere else. This venue is full of people who love to dance and encourage everyone to share in that passion.
Salsa night is every Wednesday night. The floor may be small and unimpressive, but the people are the most welcoming group of dancers you will ever meet. No cover charge! Free salsa lessons start at 7:30pm & the floor is opened up for dancing once lessons are over around 9pm. The music doesn’t stop until the bar closes. (Lots of Salsa & Bachata with a little bit of Merengue mixed in. Cha Cha and Cumbia are played on request. Later in the evening you can hear some Reggaeton and towards the end of the night maybe a few top 100 or the “Cupid Shuffle”)
If you don’t like what the DJ is playing all you need to do is make requests (specific requests including song title, artist, style) and if he doesn’t have it he will find it to play for you next week.
